Central Goldfields Shire was created by Order of the Governor in Council on 19 January 1995 and consists of the former City of Maryborough, the former Shire of Tullaroop less the Eddington District, the Dunolly, Bealiba and Moliagul districts of the former Shire of Bet Bet and the Talbot district of the former Shire of Talbot and Clunes.
The first democratically elected Central Goldfields Shire Council was elected on 15 March 1997 following a period overseen by three commissioners appointed by the State Government.
