As the name suggests, Central Goldfields, the area is steeped in goldmining, and panning history, and this recreation pursuit still continues today, in the form of metal detecting and panning, with many visitors taking the opportunity to expose this precious metal which abounds in the area, especially around the goldmining town of Dunolly.
Maryborough, the Shire's major centre, is nestled in amongst a very scenic state forest, which offers the visitor many bush walking opportunities, BBQ and picnic areas, and a plethora of flora and fauna to experience.
