Maryborough Art Gallery to host Aussie rules

Carlton Football Club legend John Nicholls will be in Maryborough this month to officially open Australian Rules: Around the Grounds - a Monash Gallery of Art travelling exhibition and the latest exhibition to feature at the Central Goldfields Art Gallery.

The exhibition turns away from the centre bounce to celebrate the action taking place around the boundaries of our national football code.

The exhibition features the work of five photographers - Donna Bailey, Paul Dunn, Rennie Ellis, Grant Hobson and Jesse Marlow. Connecting the world of footy with raw emotion and eccentric personalities of the game, these photographers grasp the wider social significance of the game and reveal the passion, spirit and vitality of local communities.

Opening on Saturday, 22 August, the exhibition will coincide perfectly with footy finals about to commence across the region. Central Goldfields Shire Arts Advisory Board Chairman Chris Meddows-Taylor said the exhibition tells a great story.

"Sporting events generate such wonderful excitement for supporters and fans and the photos in this exhibition capture that experience," Cr Meddows-Taylor said.

"I think anyone who visits the gallery to view the photos will appreciate the emotion and activity illustrated in the art work."

The exhibition will run until Sunday, 3 October. Central Goldfields Art Gallery is open every Thursday to Sunday, from 10 am until 4 pm.
