Large crowd for NYE celebrations

A large crowd came together in Maryborough to celebrate and welcome the New Year at the shire's annual celebration in front of the Maryborough Post Office

McLandress Square was buzzing with excitement and activity on Wednesday, 31 December 2008 as families took advantage of the free events offered by Central Goldfields Shire Council.

The annual Maryborough Idol competition again drew a large number of contestants and Samantha Broad was the talented winner. Other activities included an egg and spoon race; jumping castle; open air movie; and a rock-climbing wall.

Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Chris Meddows-Taylor said the evening was a great success.

"More than 800 people from the community came out to celebrate together which was wonderful to see.

"It is important for small communities to come together and share joyous events such as these as it helps to build friendships and strengthen partnerships throughout the region.

"I want to thank everyone who was involved in making the night such a success as it was a fantastic way to start the New Year," Cr Meddows-Taylor said.
