LIBRARY EVENTS

August events at Maryborough Regional Library

A chock-a-block program of events is arriving at Maryborough Regional Library next month, with something planned for each member of the family including a virtual reality trip into the microscopic world.

Immersive Science II (SciVR) is being held on Thursday 16 August at Maryborough Regional Library, where community members can join Professor Alan Duffy and Dr Rebecca Allen to discover how Australian scientists are leading the way in probing the Universe through ripples in the fabric of space-time and providing unique views of the microscopic world. Explore this Universe through the use of ground-breaking Virtual Reality technology and make new discoveries through Q&A with the speakers.

Prior to the VR Tour, participants can download the free SciVR app at www.scivr.com.au.

The Words in Winter program kicks off on 4 August and includes:

Crossword Challenge (Saturday 4 August)

Residents are invited to get their competitive, creative and crossword caps on as Central Goldfields goes head to head with other Goldfields towns’ libraries including Daylesford, Clunes and Creswick in a bid to be named crossword champions.

The task is simple: to be the first town to complete the giant crossword and to get all the answers right!

No internet is allowed to be used while completing the giant crossword but books are encouraged. Community members can drop in for five minutes or stay for the whole session.

Silent Reading Party (Tuesday 7 August)

People (aged 16 and over) are welcome to come along to this event, which is in its second year, and read in silence for one hour before participating in a casual book chat to share their thoughts on the book of their choice. Refreshments provided.

Finding Eliza launch (Wednesday 8 August)

Maryborough born author Heather Whitford Roche, who now resides in Ballarat, will be launching her debut novel, Finding Eliza. There will be an opportunity for community members for a book purchase/signing.

Recycled Book Art (Thursday 16 August)

Community members can let their imaginations run wild and create whatever they choose from a smorgasbord of materials including recycled books, fabric, coloured paper etc. The sky’s the limit as far as what you can create!

The Polar Bear Story book launch (Tuesday 21 August)

Written by local Imogen Davies, who was five years of age at the time of writing, children’s book The Polar Bear Story is being launched. Books will be available to be purchased.

National Book Week

National Book Week kicks off from 20 August and continues until 24 August. From Tuesday 21 August to Friday 24 August, all staff will be dressed up for special Story Times on Wednesdays and Fridays. A dress up story time will be held in Dunolly on Thursday 23 August.

To complement the Central Goldfields Art Gallery’s upcoming exhibition Oceanarium – Deep Sea Other World, the Library will host a complementary program about the ocean throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Stuffed Animal Sleepover

To conclude the August program and National Book Week, the fifth annual stuffed animal sleepover will be held on Friday 24 August. Children are invited to the Library in their pyjamas for a night time story session, a craft session and enjoy biscuits and Milo before leaving their toys behind where they will get up to all sorts of mischief.

Children can collect their toys the following morning along with photos of their overnight adventures.
