Youth and Family ServicesThe Central Goldfields Shire Council - Youth and Family Services are here to give young people and their families the opportunity to try new things, meet new people, and actively participate in a variety of programs, activities and events within their local community. The Youth and Family Services broad objective is to link young people, families and the community together to "Build, Strengthen and Encourage". Youth Activities ServicesYouth Activities Services (YAS) work together with young people to plan, organise and experience a wide range of exciting activities, committee run programs, music and sporting events that are responsive to the needs and wants of youth in the community. All young people are encouraged to participate and are offered the support and assistance they may need to operate and co-operate within a group. The YAS recognises that young people have many different interests, and thus tries to organise activities that appeal to a number of different people. The YAS focuses on promoting a safe, secure and non-discriminatory environment in which activities are run. Youth CommitteesOur after school programs include youth committees such as M.A.D Youth Productions (developing short films), the FReeZA Committee M.E.F.Y (Musical Entertainment For Youth), our Skate Park Committee, Tomorrow's Leaders Today (TLT) and various other activity groups that are always open to new members! The Youth Committees bring young people together to discuss things that need to be improved for young people living in Maryborough, Talbot, Carisbrook, Bealiba, Timor, Dunolly and surrounding areas. This could be something like working on developing a skate-park, organising a disco, or changing the way young people are treated in the streets. If you would like to join a Youth Committee contact Merinda Richards. Alternatively, if you, or a group of friends have a new idea for a project or group, Merinda would love to hear about it, so drop into the Youth and Family Services office, situated on the corner of Neill and Clarendon Streets in Maryborough anytime. FReeZAM.E.F.Y (Musical Entertainment For Youth) is our local FReeZA Committee, comprising of young people aged between 12 and 25. FReeZA is a program that offers young people a chance to organise drug, alcohol and smoke free musical events for young people within the Central Goldfields Shire region, such as annual events like "Battle of the Bands" and "Get Amped". M.E.F.Y can also offer young budding performers a platform to launch their musical careers. Members meet weekly and play an active role in organising everything associated with running an event, including booking local and national bands, sound and lighting, advertising and promotion. The committee makes all of the decisions about what sort of gigs to put on, whether to have live bands, DJs or something different. M.E.F.Y provides a great opportunity for young people to build their skills around communication, leadership and teamwork, and most importantly, to be recognized for their achievements. We are always after new members, so if you think this sounds like fun, contact Merinda. Teenage School Holiday ProgramTeenage School Holiday Program activities are also run by Youth and Family Services during every school holiday break. All of the activities are fully supervised and offered to young people aged between 11 and 17 at a low cost to you. We provide loads of fun activities such as trips to Melbourne, ice-skating, go-carting, skateboard coaching, rock climbing and much more! The School Holiday Program is different each school holidays and there is also a junior holiday program offering various activities over the break. Information, Support and ReferralGot a question? Youth Participation and Access ProgramThe Youth Access and Participation Program (YAPP) is for young people aged 12 to 25, who are currently not enrolled in mainstream education. Numerous services are available to youth in the Central Goldfields region, such as organisations specialising in health, education, employment or wellbeing; but sometimes, finding out about these services can be difficult or daunting. YAPP provides young people with the knowledge and awareness needed to access local support services within and around the Central Goldfields Shire. In addition, the program has begun creating a comprehensive website register of all current opportunities for young people in the area. The program has also been working alongside Lead On to assist them in the creation of a monthly publication for young people written by young people in The Maryborough Advertiser, known as "The Loop". Aside from providing access to services, YAPP also creates the opportunity for young people who are currently disengaged with mainstream education to contribute and participate in a weekly structured life skills program. This Program focuses on skills such as communication, team work, employment and decision making, and aims to give young people increased opportunities to actively participate in their local community. Further, the program now offers participation in a series of forums where young people become involved in the decision making process associated with the direction of the YAPP. If you have any questions about what is out there for young people, or would simply like more information about the Youth Participation and Access Program, please contact Jason Harrison on the details below.
